Observance for Commonwealth Day 2004
An Observance for Commonwealth Day was held on Monday 8 March at 3.15pm in Westminster Abbey in the presence of Her Majesty The Queen, and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh and His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales.

Twenty-seven years ago, the Commonwealth Heads of Government designated the second Monday in March as Commonwealth Day. This day is now celebrated across the member countries of the Commonwealth - and that includes Kiribati and Tuvalu - and in other parts of the world where Commonwealth citizens gather together.

The theme this year was “building a Commonwealth of freedom”, a very appropriate theme these days when many people continue to live in poverty but also have the added fears of environmental catastrophe and terrorism, caused by widespread greed and inconsideration of others, and some people forcing others to live in ways that put unreasonable restrictions on their freedom of speech and action.

Watch this site for more from these children’s experiences of the day!

As a spectator, I was so moved first by the song which was sung by children from various primary schools around the London boroughs and then from the Mighty Zulu nation from Durban, South Africa who captured the congregation with their authenticity in costume, dance and singing. Rakee Hardy (KTA former dance organiser) suggested to me that KTA dancers could put up something similar to the Zulu’s group for the Commonwealth Day in the future. Who knows?

The KTA children who proudly carried their country’s flags
this year during the service were:
Juliet Barber (Tuvalu) from Alton, Hampshire
and Krista Dixon (Kiribati) from Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire.
Noelyn Hardy from Wells-next-the-Sea bore the Union Jack for the United Kingdom
and Harry Dixon from Milton Keynes carried the New Zealand flag.
Our thanks to Chris Hardy for the photograph.
