NATIONAL ADDRESS BY TE BERETITENTI
12 JULY 2004

Greetings to our honoured guests from abroad:

President of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, H.E. Kessai Note and Madam Note;
President of the Republic of Nauru, H.E. Ludwig Scotty and Madam Scotty;
Prime Minister of Tuvalu, Hon. Saufatu Sopoaga and his Good Lady;
Distinguished representatives of the Governments of Australia, Great Britain, Japan, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Taiwan and the United States of America;
Representatives of the EU, USP, FAO, SPMS and your delegations;
Honorary Consuls representing Kiribati in Australia, New Zealand and Great Britain, and your spouses;

And to all I-Kiribati wherever you may be;

Greetings to you all!

We are here to celebrate the auspicious occasion of the 25th anniversary of gaining our independence. 25 years ago we were given the reins to govern ourselves. There were uncertainties at the time as to whether we were ready. Today, we can respond positively to those uncertainties.

Today, we know that Kiribati has tried to do what is right and good over the past 25 years.

For this, we must thank God for his continued guidance over us.

We also thank our past leaders for doing their best for the people. We thank Ieremia, we thank Teatao and we thank Teburoro for their invaluable contribution to the building of our nation since we gained Independence. We also thank leaders of Churches, Councils, women's groups, youth groups and other organisations. To our old men and our old women, the traditional leaders of our people, we must continue to pay our respects to you. To parents, for doing your part for your families. To the private sector, for your various contributions to the people. To those who work for Government and companies, we also thank you. To all who have responsibilities for the people, your families, your Church groups, this is our day to be proud and happy for our achievements as we can see and witness today.

Even though we are happy with what we have achieved, we must also use this day to humbly reflect on the past. To remind ourselves of the things that we have not done so well. Even though we have not had any major catastrophes it should be noted that there are still outstanding issues that are yet to be tackled. I do not need to elaborate on this as we all know what they are. But I hope that we, your leaders, can work constructively together, along with you, for the common good over the next 25 years. This can be achieved if there is continuing patience, humility and effort on all sides. Hard work and effort is our lot, we I-Kiribati, as we have few God-given benefits. But we can proudly say that we continue to shoulder our burden.

Our theme for this Jubilee is based on the belief that "an equitable distribution of national wealth can only be realised through good governance". This theme is not only related to Government’s policy for you but also touches our individual lives. May we be able to work towards this aim within our respective responsibilities. As your leaders, we will not be able to accomplish much without your cooperation and assistance. Therefore, I encourage us all to do our part over the next 25 years.

It is also appropriate on this day to thank our development partners, most of whom are represented here today, for their contributions in so many areas and in so many ways in assisting us to make progress towards the realization of our national development goals. It would have been otherwise difficult to achieve what we have achieved without their real support and partnership over the past 25 years.

I also take this opportunity to congratulate those who will be receiving medals for their respective roles for the community. May you be role models for all of us, especially for our youth.

I also thank the Chairwoman and the members of the Independence Committee for their hard work which is demonstrated in the excellent programme for these celebrations. These men and women have been working hard from the end of last year and will continue their efforts over the next few days. With these words of thanks we also encourage you to do your best and fulfill your important role.

I further thank the companies, businesses, groups and individuals who have assisted the Committee and contributed to these 25th Anniversary celebrations. We believe that these celebrations are special as it is our Silver Jubilee. We thank you and are proud of your contributions to our Jubilee.

I end with our Kiribati blessings of Te Mauri, Te Raoi ao Te Tabomoa
